DeepMind and Anthropic CEOs: AI is already coming for junior roles at our companies

The advent of artificial intelligence is beginning to reshape the job landscape, particularly at the entry-level, according to the CEOs of Google DeepMind and Anthropic. During a recent discussion at Davos, Demis Hassabis, CEO of DeepMind, noted that the impact of AI on junior roles within their organizations is becoming increasingly evident. "This year, we may start to see AI beginning to affect the junior level," Hassabis stated. He pointed out signs of a potential slowdown in hiring for entry-level positions and internships, suggesting these roles are particularly vulnerable. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, echoed this sentiment, reiterating a previous prediction that AI could eliminate a significant portion of entry-level white-collar jobs, potentially driving unemployment rates up to 20%. "We are starting to witness the initial effects of this in software and coding roles," he remarked, adding that within his company, there might soon be a reduced need for personnel at both junior and intermediate levels. Amodei emphasized the necessity for thoughtful strategies to address these changes within the workforce. Both leaders stressed that the economic repercussions of AI could necessitate institutional reforms, including the establishment of international regulations governing AI and economic interventions to lessen adverse outcomes. "My concern is that the rapid pace of AI advancement could soon surpass our capacity to adapt, potentially within just a few years," Amodei warned, highlighting the urgency of addressing these challenges.
