Microsoft researchers name 40 white-collar jobs AI is most likely to steal

As generative AI technology gained widespread traction in late 2022, concerns have surged regarding its potential to displace workers across various sectors. Business leaders are increasingly vocal about the implications of AI on employment, even if the specific jobs at risk remain unclear. For instance, Amazon's CEO Andy Jassy has acknowledged that advancements in artificial intelligence will likely result in a smaller workforce as the company seeks greater efficiency. In a similar vein, Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang emphasized that every job will feel the effects of AI. He remarked, 'Some jobs will be lost. Many jobs will be created, and what I hope is that the productivity gains across all industries will elevate society as a whole.' Recently, a study conducted by Microsoft has provided clarity on which roles are most vulnerable to automation. The research analyzed over 200,000 exchanges between users and Microsoft's Copilot AI to identify common tasks being delegated to AI. The findings indicate that knowledge-intensive professions are particularly at risk. Occupations such as Historians, Writers, CNC Tool Programmers, and Journalists could face significant challenges as AI continues to evolve. Interestingly, the study suggests that holding a college degree may not shield these jobs from AI-related job losses. The researchers noted, 'Our findings indicate that occupations requiring a Bachelor’s degree show a higher applicability for AI compared to those with lower educational requirements.' Among the roles identified as most susceptible to automation are Interpreters, Sales Representatives, Customer Service Representatives, and Technical Writers. Other jobs at risk include Political Scientists, News Analysts, and even positions like Bridge and Lock Tenders. As AI technology progresses, the landscape of employment is poised for transformation, highlighting the need for adaptability in the workforce.
