The 'Godfather of AI' says it will create 'massive' unemployment, make the rich richer, and rob people of their dignity

Geoffrey Hinton, often hailed as the 'Godfather of AI,' has voiced serious concerns regarding the technology's potential to disrupt the job market profoundly. In a recent interview with the Financial Times, Hinton, who played a pivotal role in developing the technology that powers ChatGPT, warned that AI could lead to significant unemployment, disproportionately benefiting the wealthy at the expense of the working class. Hinton predicts that the affluent will increasingly turn to AI to replace human workers, resulting in a dramatic rise in profits for a select few while leaving many in a precarious financial position. He stated, 'It will create massive unemployment and a huge rise in profits. It will make a few people much richer and most people poorer.' This alarming forecast reflects his belief that the real issue lies not solely with the technology but with the capitalist structures that govern its use. The 77-year-old researcher, who has a distinguished background including a Nobel Prize for his work on neural networks and a decade at Google, has expressed skepticism regarding proposed solutions like universal basic income (UBI). He argues that such measures fail to address a fundamental human need: dignity derived from meaningful work. 'UBI won't deal with human dignity,' Hinton remarked, emphasizing that people's sense of worth is often tied to their professional roles. While Hinton's perspective is notably grim, not all figures in the tech industry share his views. OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman has advocated for UBI as a safety net amid potential job losses, even backing one of the largest UBI trials in the United States. Meanwhile, Elon Musk has suggested that, in a future dominated by AI, traditional employment may become obsolete, but UBI could allow individuals to pursue more meaningful endeavors. Investor Vinod Khosla has gone a step further, estimating that AI could handle 80% of tasks across various occupations, thus necessitating UBI to mitigate rising inequality. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, believes that UBI is only a small part of the solution and that society must develop entirely new frameworks to cope with these changes. Despite his earlier suggestions to the UK government regarding UBI, Hinton maintains that financial compensation cannot replace the intrinsic value individuals find in their work. He remains hopeful that AI will bring about advancements in sectors like healthcare and education, yet he acknowledges the risk of this technology undermining livelihoods. 'We are at a point in history where something amazing is happening,' he concluded, 'and it may be amazingly good, and it may be amazingly bad.'
