The Godmother of AI says she is disappointed by AI's messaging: It's either 'doomsday' or 'total utopian'

Fei-Fei Li, renowned as the 'Godmother of AI,' expressed her concerns regarding the exaggerated narratives surrounding artificial intelligence during a recent talk at Stanford University. She criticized the prevailing extremes of discourse—dubbed as either 'doomsday' scenarios or utopian visions. "I consider myself the most tedious speaker in AI today, largely due to my frustration with the hyperbole on both ends of the spectrum," Li remarked. The discourse has been rife with warnings about AI leading to humanity's downfall, while on the flip side, some advocates tout notions of 'post-scarcity' and limitless productivity. As a distinguished professor at Stanford and the inventor of ImageNet, Li co-founded World Labs last year, focusing on developing AI models that can understand and interact with 3D environments. In her address, she underscored the importance of informing the broader public, particularly those outside of tech hubs like Silicon Valley. "People need to grasp the realities of AI and its implications," she stated. Li is not alone in her quest for a more nuanced narrative. In July, Andrew Ng, co-founder of Google Brain, remarked that the concept of artificial general intelligence (AGI) is often overstated. He pointed out that there will continue to be numerous tasks that only humans can perform for a considerable time. Similarly, Yann LeCun, former chief AI scientist at Meta, described large language models as impressive yet limited, clarifying that they do not pave the way towards achieving AGI. LeCun recently announced his departure from Meta after a 12-year tenure to pursue his own AI startup, further illustrating the dynamic and evolving landscape of AI development. As these leading voices in AI advocate for a shift away from alarmist and overly optimistic messaging, the call for a balanced approach to understanding AI's role in society becomes increasingly vital.
