AI agents aren’t the ‘new Google,’ says Airbnb CEO

In the wake of a strong second-quarter performance, Airbnb's CEO Brian Chesky addressed the company's approach to artificial intelligence during a recent earnings call. While acknowledging the potential of AI chatbots to enhance the travel and services sector, he advised investors against viewing them as a direct substitute for traditional search engines like Google. Chesky emphasized the experimental nature of AI integration, stating, "We’re still kind of feeling out the space." He cautioned that AI agents should not be compared to Google, asserting that current AI models lack proprietary status, meaning that multiple companies, including Airbnb, can leverage similar technologies. The CEO painted a comprehensive picture of the evolving AI landscape, noting that various startups will emerge alongside established companies transitioning to AI solutions. He remarked on the importance of not only having superior AI models but also the necessity of customizing these models to fit specific applications. Airbnb's efforts in AI have already yielded results; their AI customer service agent in the United States has successfully reduced human agent interactions by 15%. Chesky pointed out this was a more complex challenge than anticipated, as these agents must maintain accuracy and reliability, avoiding the pitfalls of generating incorrect information. Currently, the AI customer service agent operates in English, utilizing 13 distinct models trained on a wealth of conversational data. Plans are underway to expand its capabilities to additional languages and enhance its functionalities in the coming year, allowing it to assist users in managing reservations and planning trips. Looking forward, Chesky mentioned that AI will soon be integrated into Airbnb's search functionalities, although the company is still contemplating how to work with third-party AI agents. He reassured investors that the essential requirement of an Airbnb account for bookings will prevent the commoditization of their services. Despite surpassing analyst expectations with a revenue of $3.1 billion and earnings per share of $1.03, Airbnb's stock faced a decline following forecasts suggesting slower growth for the latter half of the year. Chesky remains optimistic about AI's potential role in generating leads and enhancing user experience on the platform.
