Airbnb CEO says AI chatbots can’t replace Google: Here’s why

During a recent earnings call, Airbnb's CEO Brian Chesky expressed his views on the current capabilities of AI chatbots, warning that technologies like ChatGPT and others are not yet ready to rival Google as the primary gateway to the internet. Although he recognizes the significant potential of AI, he emphasized that these tools are still in their developmental stages and may take considerable time to reach their full capabilities. Chesky advised investors that while AI chatbots serve as effective resources for enhancing customer service and personalization, they are not positioned to replace Google’s robust referral system. He stated, "I don’t think we should think of them as the ‘new Google’ yet," highlighting that the industry is still exploring the possibilities of AI. Furthermore, he pointed out that the underlying models for chatbots like ChatGPT are not exclusive. "The model powering ChatGPT is not proprietary. We can also utilize the API, and there are other models available to us," Chesky noted. He stressed that successful AI implementation relies on creating a tailored interface and fine-tuning the model for specific applications rather than merely possessing the best technology. Airbnb has reported that its AI customer service agent in the U.S. has successfully decreased the number of guests needing to contact human agents by nearly 15%. This AI solution, developed using 13 distinct models and trained on a vast dataset of conversations, is currently available in English and plans are in place to expand its language capabilities this year. By next year, the bot is expected to become more autonomous, assisting users not only with cancellation processes but also with trip planning and booking. Chesky acknowledged the transformative impact of AI chatbots on customer interactions but maintained that they currently serve as enhancements rather than replacements for human agents. As technology continues to evolve, the potential for AI to reshape customer service remains promising, but according to Chesky, it is still a work in progress.
