Brian Chesky, the CEO of Airbnb, is stepping beyond his role as a supporter of artificial intelligence and is set to establish his own AI lab. This significant move underscores his dissatisfaction with the current offerings from leading AI models, as reported by Bloomberg and subsequently confirmed by sources to TechCrunch. Chesky has previously integrated AI coding tools into Airbnb, but he has refrained from forming partnerships with existing large language model (LLM) providers, citing that the products were not adequately developed. With a wealth of experience in the tech industry, Chesky's connections run deep; he first met Sam Altman in 2006 through Y Combinator, which played a pivotal role in Airbnb's early days. Their relationship has evolved over the years, particularly as OpenAI gained prominence. In his advisory role, Chesky has provided counsel to Altman on managing the rapid growth of tech companies and was even considered for a position on OpenAI's board. His influence notably helped Altman regain his leadership position after a controversial dismissal from the company's board. However, now Chesky appears to be positioning himself in direct competition with OpenAI. While details about the new AI lab remain sparse, reports suggest it may focus on enhancing user interaction and design—elements that have been central to Airbnb’s success. This initiative seems to parallel the efforts of Brett Adcock at Hark, another AI lab that aims to innovate user interfaces for AI assistants, alongside hardware development. Despite this new venture, Chesky is not expected to take a hands-on role in the lab's operations, as he will continue to fulfill his responsibilities as Airbnb’s CEO. The individual appointed to lead this new endeavor will face challenges not only from other AI laboratories but also from a leadership style that may lean towards micromanagement. As of now, representatives from both Airbnb and Chesky have chosen not to comment on this developing story.
