Airbnb adds direct messaging, new social features after app overhaul

Airbnb has rolled out exciting new social features designed to enhance user interaction on its platform. Guests participating in experiences can now utilize a direct messaging option, enabling them to connect and stay in touch with fellow attendees. This update includes a pre-event dashboard, showcasing profiles of other participants, which aims to foster connections before the experience begins. Dave Stephenson, Airbnb's business chief, emphasized that these technological advancements align with the company's vision for future growth. Users must opt in to these social features for each experience, with the flexibility to unsubscribe whenever they choose. These enhancements come on the heels of a significant app redesign in May, which introduced new services such as catering and personal training, along with a comprehensive makeover of Airbnb’s experiences segment. The company has long aimed to diversify its offerings beyond home rentals, a strategy that was temporarily halted in 2020 due to the pandemic's impact on travel. Earlier this year, Airbnb committed to investing between $200 million and $250 million into new business opportunities. During the May update, Stephenson expressed confidence in the company’s robust foundation for expanding its services. Additionally, Airbnb has upgraded its AI chatbot, launched earlier this year, to provide personalized customer support. The enhanced chatbot is now capable of canceling reservations or modifying dates upon request and is accessible in English, Spanish, and French for users in North America. Other notable updates include flexible carousels that display alternative listings beyond initial search criteria, as well as interactive maps featuring nearby landmarks, restaurants, and attractions, complete with various viewing options.
