Airbnb wants to help hosts prevent Halloween parties in the U.S. and Canada

As Halloween approaches, Airbnb is stepping up its efforts to prevent unauthorized parties in the U.S. and Canada. The home rental platform announced on Monday that it will deploy its anti-party technology this Halloween weekend to mitigate risks associated with unauthorized events. This technology assesses a variety of factors, including the duration of a stay, the distance from the guest's location, property type, and the timing of the booking, to identify and block reservations deemed to be higher risk. In their announcement, Airbnb emphasized their commitment to proactive measures aimed at reducing the likelihood of unauthorized parties, describing this enhanced technology as a crucial component of their broader strategy to support hosts, guests, and local communities, while promoting responsible travel. Airbnb has a history of attempting to curb parties during holiday periods. Last Halloween, for example, the company successfully prevented around 38,000 potential party bookings in the U.S. and approximately 6,300 in Canada. This technology has also been utilized during other festive occasions, such as New Year's Eve and summer holidays like Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. Since implementing a ban on parties and events in 2020 to help control the spread of COVID-19, Airbnb has reported a 50% decrease in party incidents globally. This ban was formalized in 2022 following a series of safety measures introduced after a tragic shooting at an Airbnb rental that resulted in five fatalities. In response, CEO Brian Chesky announced a crackdown on 'party houses' and reiterated the company's commitment to addressing abusive conduct from both hosts and guests. Airbnb has made it clear that accounts violating the no-party policy will face suspension or bans from the platform. To further ensure safety, the company offers features such as a 24-hour safety line and noise sensors for hosts to monitor their properties effectively.
