Airbnb tops revenue estimates, but Middle East cancellations rise due to Iran war

Airbnb has released its first-quarter earnings report, showcasing a mix of strong revenue growth alongside emerging challenges stemming from the ongoing conflict in Iran. The company experienced an 18% increase in revenue, reaching $2.27 billion compared to the previous year. Additionally, net income rose to $160 million, translating to 26 cents per share, up from $154 million or 24 cents per share in the prior year. For the upcoming quarter, Airbnb is optimistic, projecting revenue between $3.54 billion and $3.60 billion, exceeding analysts’ expectations of $3.46 billion. The company has also adjusted its annual revenue forecast, anticipating growth in the low to mid-teens, an increase from an earlier estimate of 12%. However, the ongoing war in Iran is creating headwinds for the travel sector. Airbnb anticipates a 100-basis-point impact on both nights and seats booked in the second quarter, alongside a slowdown compared to the first quarter due to the regional instability. In a letter to shareholders, the company expressed confidence in its momentum, despite the challenges posed by the conflict and tougher comparisons in the latter half of the year. The Middle East turmoil has resulted in a slight uptick in cancellations across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the Asia Pacific regions. Yet, Airbnb is drawing parallels to last year's tariff threats that softened travel in some North American regions while boosting interest in others. The company emphasized its extensive global inventory of homes across various price points as a crucial factor in maintaining consistent performance even amidst difficulties. The gross booking value, which accounts for host earnings and related fees, surged by 19% to $29.2 billion, surpassing analyst predictions of $27.82 billion. Nights and seats booked also increased by 9% to 156.2 million, exceeding estimates of 155.77 million. Airbnb is preparing for a bustling summer season, coinciding with the upcoming FIFA World Cup, which will take place across 16 cities in Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. The company aims to host a record number of guests for this event, having welcomed over 100,000 new properties to its platform since outreach initiatives began in October. Earlier this year, the Milano Cortina Olympics and Paralympic Games attracted approximately 200,000 guests, with a significant increase in local property supply. In terms of profitability, Airbnb reported an adjusted EBITDA of $519 million, exceeding the $485 million forecast from analysts, further underscoring the company’s robust financial standing.
