Airbnb has unveiled an innovative feature dubbed "Reserve Now, Pay Later," allowing U.S. users to secure accommodations without making an upfront payment. This new option could significantly ease the booking process for travelers, providing more flexibility in case plans change. This feature is applicable to listings that offer either a "flexible" or "moderate" cancellation policy. With flexible options, users can cancel their reservations up to 24 hours prior to check-in, while moderate policies permit fee-free cancellations until five days before the check-in date. However, guests must settle the total amount for their stay before the end of the free cancellation window, ensuring they are reminded to complete their payment in a timely manner. Airbnb has previous experience in the flexible payment sector, having launched a "Pay part now, part later" initiative in 2018, which allowed users to pay a percentage upfront and the remainder later. In a partnership with Klarna in 2023, the platform introduced the ability to divide payments into four installments over six weeks. A recent survey conducted by Airbnb in collaboration with Focaldata revealed that 55% of respondents preferred flexible payment options when booking accommodations. Additionally, 42% expressed that they had missed opportunities to book properties due to complications with payment arrangements among fellow travelers.
