Airbnb CEO Chesky says app can become an 'Amazon for services' as rental platform expands

Airbnb's CEO, Brian Chesky, envisions a future where the rental platform evolves into a comprehensive service hub for travelers, akin to Amazon. In a recent interview with CNBC, Chesky expressed his ambition for Airbnb to diversify into numerous categories, stating, "I imagine one day we'll have dozens, possibly even hundreds of categories, just like Amazon." The company has recently introduced independent hotels and various services, including car rentals, grocery delivery, and luggage storage, showcasing its intent to move beyond traditional home rentals. To entice users, Airbnb is offering up to 15% back in platform credits for bookings at boutique hotels. Chesky highlighted the need for such expansions in a fragmented travel and living market, indicating that Airbnb might explore offering equipment rentals for activities like surfing and skiing in the future, along with gym passes. This initiative comes as Airbnb undertakes a multi-phase redesign, having previously scaled back expansion plans during the COVID-19 pandemic. Last summer, the platform launched a services division featuring ten categories, marking a significant revamp of its app. Since then, it has also integrated social features and enhanced its AI chatbot capabilities. The company's AI strategy is poised for further enhancement this year, with the chatbot now capable of resolving booking issues directly within the chat interface. Additionally, Airbnb is developing an AI feature that summarizes guest reviews, along with plans to introduce an AI voice assistant and AI-generated listing summaries later in the year. Business chief Dave Stephenson remarked that Airbnb is judiciously selecting tools from various open-source and large language model providers for its AI functionalities. He emphasized the importance of using the right model for specific purposes. Chesky acknowledged the rapid evolution of the AI market, cautioning against investing heavily without considering the competition. He believes that the most significant advancements in AI may still be on the horizon. As the summer travel season begins, Airbnb, like many in the industry, is facing challenges such as rising fuel prices due to the ongoing conflict in Iran. The company recently noted an uptick in cancellations across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia Pacific regions, attributing this to geopolitical tensions. Despite these hurdles, Chesky remains confident in Airbnb's resilience, citing its diverse geographic presence and affordability as key strengths during uncertain economic times. He observed that travelers tend to book their trips on shorter notice when faced with economic instability.
