Airbnb gets into hotels, expands AI for host onboarding and customer support

Airbnb, traditionally known for connecting users with private accommodations, is venturing into the hotel sector to enhance its revenue streams and expand options for travelers. This initiative comes after several months of testing hotel listings, and the company is now officially integrating a hotel search filter into its app. Initially collaborating with boutique hotels across 20 prominent cities, including New York, Paris, London, Madrid, Rome, and Singapore, Airbnb aims to cater to travelers seeking short-term stays. When users search for accommodations for one or two nights, a pop-up will prompt them to explore hotel options. Additionally, they can narrow their search specifically to hotels through a dedicated filter. To entice users, Airbnb is rolling out a price match guarantee, promising app credits to users who find lower rates elsewhere. Jud Coplan, Airbnb's VP of marketing, mentioned that hotels are particularly suitable for certain types of trips, such as last-minute bookings and business travel. The new feature allows users to seamlessly discover hotel options within the app, enhancing their booking experience. This move not only diversifies Airbnb's offerings but also addresses the limitations in markets where short-term rentals face restrictions. Expanding beyond property bookings, Airbnb is also keen on enhancing user experiences through services like grocery delivery and airport pickups. The company plans to introduce luggage storage across over 15,000 locations and car rental services this summer. In addition to these offerings, Airbnb is enhancing its experiences segment by including guided tours of 3,000 landmarks and over 2,500 food-related experiences, aiming to compete with platforms like Viator and GetYourGuide. The app is undergoing a redesign to accommodate these diverse services, with users able to view tailored suggestions on the homepage. While Airbnb is not launching an official loyalty program, users can earn credits for their first car rental or receive up to 15% credit on hotel bookings, potentially fostering increased app usage. In the realm of technology, Airbnb is integrating AI across various features. While many travel companies have embraced AI for itinerary building, Airbnb is taking a different approach. CEO Brian Chesky emphasized that the focus should be on utilizing AI to simplify the user experience rather than replacing personal interaction with chatbots. The latest updates include AI tools that assist hosts in creating listings and enhance customer interactions with category tags for reviews. An AI-driven comparison tool will also provide summaries for properties in users' wishlists. Airbnb is significantly investing in AI for customer service, having rolled out an AI bot in the U.S. last year, which is now set for global expansion. This bot currently addresses 40% of service queries and will soon feature interactive cards for managing trips and resolving issues. Additionally, a voice-based AI assistant is in the works, allowing users to communicate via call, with partnerships being explored for this innovative product.
