Kayak and Expedia race to build AI travel agents that turn social posts into itineraries

The travel industry is on the brink of a transformative shift as companies like Kayak and Expedia unveil their ambitions to create AI-driven travel agents that can convert social media posts into personalized itineraries. As discussions around AI assistants grow, the idea of a digital agent that can seamlessly assist in travel planning is becoming a reality. At the recent VB Transform event, Matthias Keller, the Chief Product Officer at Kayak, highlighted the company’s journey towards this vision. He noted that Kayak has been experimenting with AI capabilities for several years, even collaborating with Amazon’s Alexa. Although they no longer operate on Alexa, the company has developed various search modes to enhance user experience. "We aim to create a travel agent that is always available, agentic, and powered by AI," Keller explained. Recently, Kayak launched a new initiative called Kayak AI, which offers a fully chat-based platform that combines the functionalities of ChatGPT with various specialized tools for booking flights and hotels. Expedia’s Chief Technology Officer, Ramana Thumu, acknowledged the growing consumer demand for a seamless travel experience. He emphasized the importance of balancing user control with the support provided by AI agents. "Customer expectations are evolving, and it’s crucial to find the right equilibrium between user autonomy and the assistance we offer," Thumu stated. One innovative feature from Expedia is its Trip Matching tool, which allows users to send travel-related public Instagram Reels to the platform. Utilizing a vast database built over 30 years, Expedia can then generate a tailored itinerary based on these social media inspirations. This capability illustrates the vital role of data in crafting personalized travel experiences. Both Keller and Thumu pointed out the challenges of achieving effective personalization. They envision a future where AI not only suggests travel plans based on past preferences but also recommends activities influenced by real-time weather conditions at the destination. Additionally, the companies are focusing on engaging "snackers"—individuals who browse for travel options without the immediate intent to book. With the help of AI, these users can easily access the information they seek, which might inspire them to finalize their travel plans. Keller remarked, "AI can simplify complex trip planning without the need for extensive searches, providing detailed insights that traditional booking sites might overlook." As Kayak and Expedia continue to innovate in the AI space, the potential for a new era of travel planning that is both efficient and user-friendly is within reach.
