A recent report reveals that artificial intelligence is set to play a crucial role in the online shopping experience during Amazon's Prime Day sale, which kicked off on Tuesday and runs through July 11. This annual shopping event is expected to generate an impressive $23.8 billion in online sales across U.S. e-commerce platforms, fueled by competing promotions from other retailers. Adobe, a leading analytics firm that often provides insights into major shopping events such as Black Friday, has analyzed over one trillion visits to U.S. retail websites and 100 million SKUs across 18 categories. Their forecast suggests that this year's Prime Day could rival the sales volume of "two Black Fridays" combined, marking a significant 28.4% increase from the previous year and an additional $9.6 billion in sales compared to last year’s event. Mobile shopping is anticipated to be a significant contributor, accounting for over half of the sales at 52.5%. However, generative AI is also emerging as a game-changer. Adobe predicts that traffic generated from AI sources will soar by an astonishing 3,200% year-over-year during the Prime Day event. While this represents a smaller share compared to traditional channels like paid search and email, the growth trajectory suggests increasing consumer trust in AI tools for online shopping. The surge in AI usage was notably observed during the 2024 holiday season, where traffic from gen AI sources increased by 1,300% from November 1 to December 31, compared to the previous year. A survey of 5,000 U.S. consumers highlighted key areas where AI is being utilized: 55% for research, 47% for product recommendations, 43% for locating deals, and 35% each for gift ideas and finding unique items. Remarkably, 92% of those who engaged with AI reported an enhanced shopping experience, and 87% expressed a greater likelihood of using AI for more significant purchases. As this trend gains momentum, AI providers are actively integrating these technologies into shopping experiences. Notable advancements include Google's Gemini-enhanced product search and OpenAI's shopping features in ChatGPT. Adobe's predictions for this Prime Day indicate that consumers will be on the lookout for discounts, particularly in apparel, with back-to-school shopping needs also significantly influencing sales this year.
