Tech layoffs top 40,000 in first 3 months of 2026 as firms reshape workforces for AI

In an unprecedented shift, global technology firms have collectively laid off over 40,000 employees in the initial months of 2026. This wave of job reductions reflects a significant restructuring as companies adapt to the rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in their operations. Leading the charge, Amazon.com Inc. announced in January its intention to eliminate approximately 16,000 positions spanning various departments, including Amazon Web Services, retail, and advertising. Additionally, the company has made further cuts, letting go of around 100 roles within its robotics division. On March 12, Atlassian Corp., a prominent software firm, revealed plans to reduce its workforce by about 1,600 employees, which amounts to a 10% cut. This decision is part of the company's strategy to refocus on AI investments and enhance enterprise sales, impacting staff in North America, Australia, and India. Payments giant Block Inc., co-founded by Jack Dorsey, is also scaling back, with plans to cut around 4,000 jobs as it shifts towards AI-driven productivity solutions. The trend is not isolated, as other notable companies have similarly downsized their operations this year. For instance, Walmart-owned Flipkart Internet has let go of approximately 300 employees following its annual performance reviews, while Ericsson has announced a reduction of about 1,600 jobs in Sweden as part of its cost-cutting measures. Looking ahead, more layoffs may be on the way as these companies prioritize investments in AI infrastructure. Reports indicate that Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is poised to implement significant job cuts, potentially reducing its Reality Labs division workforce by up to 20%, affecting around 16,000 employees. This move comes as the company scales back its spending on parts of its metaverse initiative. In a similar vein, Oracle Corp. is contemplating layoffs that could involve tens of thousands of its employees, as the company intensifies its focus on AI-centric data centers, although these plans have yet to be publicly confirmed.
