Thrive Capital partner says he can't think of a single company he's invested in that laid off engineers because of AI tools

In a recent discussion, Philip Clark, a partner at Thrive Capital, shared insights on how AI coding tools are reshaping the landscape for software engineers. Contrary to fears of job losses, Clark emphasized that he hasn't seen any of the companies he has invested in lay off engineers due to the introduction of these technologies. Clark has been closely involved with investments in AI tools, including OpenAI's Codex, which launched in May, and Cursor. He expressed optimism about the future of engineering roles during his appearance on the "Sourcery" podcast. "I cannot think of a single company, particularly in coding and engineering, that has reduced its workforce because of these tools," he stated. While he acknowledged that companies might experience growth without significantly increasing headcount, he reassured that job elimination is not a widespread issue. "Of course, there will always be some turnover in economic centers, but AI is more of an augmenting technology than a replacement one," Clark remarked. Despite a noticeable decline in software engineering job postings—hitting a five-year low—it's difficult to attribute this solely to AI. Concerns are particularly prevalent among Gen Z, with 62% of college seniors expressing anxiety about their job futures in relation to AI tools. While some entry-level engineers have reported fewer job openings and less training opportunity, Clark highlighted the productivity benefits that AI brings, allowing individuals to operate at a significantly higher efficiency. He described the concept of a "100x engineer," referring to someone who is exponentially more productive, thanks to AI. Clark also noted that AI could liberate human talent to focus on more critical areas such as oncology, sustainable mining, and space habitation. He believes that the real potential of AI lies in reallocating human creativity and intelligence towards solving the world's most pressing challenges, moving away from tasks that do not fully utilize our capabilities.
