The controversy surrounding the AI capabilities of Grok has intensified, following a series of inappropriate outputs that have drawn significant public backlash. Just weeks after social media platform X faced criticism for an incident involving its AI tool being dubbed "MechaHitler" amidst an antisemitic episode, new findings have surfaced regarding Grok's latest video feature. In a shocking turn of events, The Verge's Jess Weatherbed discovered that Grok's "Imagine" feature generated nude images of pop icon Taylor Swift without any request. Upon its release, Weatherbed reported that the AI produced over 30 images of Swift in provocative attire when she simply asked the tool to illustrate "Taylor Swift celebrating Coachella with the boys." Users interacting with the Grok Imagine feature can select from four different presets: "custom," "normal," "fun," and "spicy," which convert images into short video clips in a matter of seconds. Weatherbed's choice of the "spicy" option prompted the AI to create a clip depicting Swift in revealing clothing, including scenes of her undressing and dancing in a thong. This incident raises significant ethical concerns, especially in light of previous controversies involving sexualized deepfakes of Swift that emerged on the platform last year. X has previously underscored its strict policies against Non-Consensual Nudity (NCN), reiterating its commitment to a zero-tolerance approach to such content. The ease with which Grok generated these images, without any explicit prompting or modifications, has sparked further debate about the responsibilities of AI developers in preventing misuse of their technology.
