OpenAI's most advanced AI model is breaking free — and colliding with Elon Musk's latest Grok release

OpenAI is set to introduce its most advanced AI model to date, the GPT-5.6 family, with a public rollout scheduled for Thursday. This announcement comes amid notable competition from Elon Musk, who revealed that SpaceXAI will soon debut its Grok 4.5 model. The timing of these launches is significant, as OpenAI's decision to stagger its release follows a request from the Trump administration. Just hours after OpenAI's announcement late Tuesday, Musk took the stage to share details about Grok 4.5, describing it as an 'Opus-class model' that boasts improved speed, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. This comes in the wake of a prior dispute involving Anthropic and the Trump administration, which imposed an export ban on Anthropic's Fable and Mythos models due to concerns about potential misuse in cyberattacks. In response to these developments, Anthropic had temporarily halted these models, although Fable 5 was re-released last week. The GPT-5.6 family will be available in three variations: Sol, Terra, and Luna. Sol is presented as the flagship model, distinguished by its enhanced capabilities in areas such as coding, biology, and cybersecurity. Terra is designed for general productivity, while Luna aims to provide a faster and more cost-effective option. This competitive environment highlights a renewed rivalry between Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, particularly following a contentious legal battle earlier this year. Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI, accused the organization of straying from its original nonprofit mission, leading to a lawsuit that he ultimately lost due to timing issues. Both OpenAI and Musk are now emphasizing efficiency as a critical feature of their new models, reflecting a growing trend among companies to optimize their AI technologies. Meanwhile, Google is also preparing to launch its own advanced model, Gemini 3.5 Pro, later this month, intensifying the race in the AI landscape.
