Anthropic and OpenAI have a new rivalry: who rings the bell first

In an intense competition for supremacy in artificial intelligence, Anthropic and OpenAI are now shifting their focus to Wall Street. The stakes are high as Anthropic recently disclosed its confidential IPO filing, igniting speculation over which company will make its public debut first. The significance of being the first to go public is considerable. A successful IPO could provide Anthropic with immediate access to investor capital, liquidity for its employees, and an opportunity to shape market perceptions on AI valuations. However, it also exposes the company to public scrutiny, giving OpenAI a chance to gauge market reactions before making its own move. Reports surfaced last month indicating that OpenAI was on the verge of filing its own confidential S-1 with the SEC. Yet, Anthropic’s announcement sent shockwaves through the tech community, hinting at what could be one of the largest IPOs in history. The confidentiality of these filings raises the possibility that OpenAI has already submitted its S-1 without public knowledge, as they did not respond to inquiries for clarification. Currently, speculation favors Anthropic as an 82% favorite to launch its IPO first, according to betting markets. Industry experts suggest this first-mover advantage could lead to a more favorable reception from investors, allowing Anthropic to capitalize on the current excitement surrounding AI technologies. Mike Alves, founder of VIDA Vision Fund, noted that the initial public offering could secure essential funding and set a precedent for how the market values subsequent offerings. Page Hedly, a former OpenAI employee turned AI safety advocate, emphasized that the first company to go public can frame the narrative around its strengths while potentially downplaying weaknesses. Conversely, some analysts argue that waiting might be a strategic move for OpenAI. Harrison Rolfes from Pitchbook highlighted how Anthropic’s IPO could expose it to risks that OpenAI could learn from before making its own public offering. If Anthropic’s financials fall short, OpenAI might adjust its strategy accordingly, while a successful debut could provide momentum for its own launch. Following Anthropic’s announcement, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman minimized the competitive aspect of the IPO race, asserting that their primary focus remains on delivering superior technology rather than beating Anthropic to the stock market. He believes there will be ample demand for AI solutions to support multiple providers, rather than just one dominant player. Despite the anticipation surrounding their potential public offerings, Altman has indicated that OpenAI will proceed with its IPO when it feels ready, rather than rushing into the market. The timing of both companies' IPOs is crucial, and analysts warn that they may need to navigate closely to avoid overlapping disclosures that could hinder their success.
