Buser noted that, while some may resist this technological shift, it is rapidly gaining traction. He emphasized that AI's integration could revolutionize operational efficiency in gaming, leading to reduced costs and accelerated production timelines. "Just like the Iron Man suit, it’s still you inside, but you gain capabilities that were previously out of reach," he explained. By equipping developers with these advanced tools, studios can enhance productivity and eliminate monotonous tasks, a change that tends to be positively received after implementation. He urged company executives to take proactive steps in equipping their teams. "If you're the CTO of a gaming company, it’s vital to provide your developers with this 'suit of armor.' Ensure it's safe, and invest time in helping your team understand its potential and limitations," Buser advised. This cultural shift within organizations, he added, is as crucial as the technical integration of AI tools into development processes. Buser acknowledged that understanding AI cannot solely rest on developers; executives must also engage with the technology. "It’s a complex landscape, and there's no guarantee of where it leads. It requires hands-on experimentation to fully grasp its capabilities," he said. As industries worldwide embrace AI, concerns about job displacement linger. However, Buser contends that AI serves as an empowering asset, enhancing the skills of workers rather than replacing them. With three decades in the gaming sector, he sees AI as a chance to redefine player experiences. At Google, this translates to the concept of 'living games,' where ongoing content updates create dynamic gaming environments. AI has the potential to make these living games even more tailored and immersive, with quicker update cycles for a seamless player experience. "Looking ahead, we envision real-time game experiences that adapt to players’ needs," Buser stated. For the time being, the gaming industry is focused on normalizing AI integration. "By 2026, we anticipate a significant scaling of these initiatives, with developers utilizing AI across various aspects of their workflows, leading to games that leverage multiple AI-driven features for an enhanced player experience," he concluded.
