A Windsurf AI engineer says Google gave him a job offer that would 'explode same day.' He didn't take it.

In the competitive landscape of artificial intelligence, job offers are not just enticing; they often come with a ticking clock. Prem Qu Nair, a pivotal software engineer at Windsurf, revealed that he received a time-sensitive offer from Google to join its prestigious DeepMind lab during a recent hiring spree targeting AI talent. Nair, who was the second employee at Windsurf, shared on social media that he had mere hours to decide whether to accept the offer or risk losing it entirely. He expressed the weight of the decision, stating, "I had to forfeit all of my vested shares earned over my 3.5+ years at Windsurf. Ultimately, I ended up with only 1% of what my shares would have been worth at the time of the deal." Choosing not to accept Google's offer, Nair decided to remain in the AI field by joining Cognition, a rival company that had acquired the remnants of Windsurf after a failed $3 billion deal with OpenAI. This acquisition followed a swift series of events where Google also hired away key executives from Windsurf. According to sources familiar with the situation, the rapid negotiations necessitated immediate job offers for those contemplating leaving Windsurf. Nair expressed his enthusiasm for Cognition's potential, likening the atmosphere to the early days of Windsurf—filled with creativity and excitement. "For someone who loves software engineering, Cognition feels like home. It reminds me of the energy of the earliest days of Windsurf, where we wrote excessive amounts of code and had excessive amounts of fun," he stated. Windsurf expressed delight in Nair’s decision to stay, with spokesperson Payal Patel affirming, "As one of the early minds of Windsurf, we are thrilled to have Prem and his great expertise working alongside us again at Cognition." The AI sector is witnessing a surge in aggressive recruitment efforts, with tech giants vying for top talent. Reports indicate that companies like Meta are offering staggering compensation packages, reaching up to $100 million, to lure AI researchers away from their current roles. The competition for AI expertise is fiercer than ever, as companies scramble to secure the best minds in the industry.
