A Google veteran who founded Character.AI is jumping to OpenAI

Noam Shazeer, a prominent figure in the AI community and co-lead of Google's Gemini project, is making a significant career shift by joining OpenAI. This move marks a notable development in the ongoing competition for top talent within the AI industry. In a recent post on X, Shazeer expressed his gratitude for his time at Google, stating, "It was a difficult decision to move on. I'm incredibly proud of the amazing team at Google and everything we've built together. It has been an honor and a pleasure to work with all of you." His departure underscores the fierce rivalry among tech giants for exceptional talent. Shazeer has been with Google since 2000, except for a brief period when he co-founded Character.AI, a startup focused on chatbot technology. In 2024, Google made headlines by acquiring non-exclusive rights to Character.AI's technology for $2.7 billion, which included a stipulation for Shazeer to return to the company. Despite this, he is now poised to contribute to the innovative team at OpenAI, the organization behind the widely recognized ChatGPT. Shazeer's expertise has been instrumental in shaping Google's AI initiatives, including his co-authorship of a pivotal 2017 paper that laid the groundwork for modern large language models. His transition to OpenAI reflects a broader trend where leading firms in the AI sector, such as Google, Meta, and Anthropic, are aggressively recruiting high-caliber researchers and engineers with lucrative compensation packages and strategic acquisition deals.
