Inside the AI startups reinventing consulting: 'It's not as good as McKinsey, but it's instant'

The landscape of consulting is undergoing a significant transformation thanks to advancements in artificial intelligence. For years, the tech and consulting sectors have collaborated closely, with major firms relying on Silicon Valley innovations. However, the emergence of AI technologies is reshaping this dynamic. Startups focused on AI-driven consulting solutions are gaining traction, particularly as established firms face competition from these agile newcomers. Investors in Silicon Valley have noted a surge of interest in these companies over the past year. According to Thomson Nguyen, co-founder and managing partner at Saga, while these startups may not rival industry giants like McKinsey, they have the potential to serve mid-market companies that lack the resources to engage with traditional consulting firms. One notable player in this space is PromptQL, an enterprise platform developed by the open-source unicorn Hasura. This innovative solution automates various consulting tasks by enabling clients to create custom AI analysts that integrate seamlessly with existing data frameworks. These AI analysts are designed to perform functions typically handled by data scientists, constantly learning and evolving based on their operational environments. Tanmai Gopal, co-founder and CEO of PromptQL, has highlighted the platform's unique capability to deliver accurate AI insights without the cumbersome data preparation often required. He emphasized that the consulting tech sector has seen rapid growth recently, with a noticeable shift towards more specialized AI applications. Investment trends also reflect this burgeoning market. Tomasz Tunguz, a general partner at Theory Ventures, pointed out that in the past nine months, he has observed a wave of AI startups emerging with a consulting focus. He noted five key categories: AI solutions for call centers, tech consulting for AI software, automation tools for finance processes, strategic AI system developers, and startups in executive coaching. Recent funding successes in this sector include Parable, which raised $16.6 million for its employee time-tracking platform, and Profound, which secured $20 million for its answer engine optimization service. Dialogue AI, specializing in market research automation, recently raised $6 million, while Xavier AI, claiming to be the first AI strategy consultant, is preparing to close a seed funding round soon. Founders in this space aim to democratize access to consulting services rather than replace human consultants entirely. Gopal remarked that while AI can handle data-centric tasks, the nuanced consulting that firms like McKinsey offer cannot be fully replicated by technology alone. The future of consulting appears to be a blend of human expertise and AI efficiency, creating new opportunities for businesses of all sizes.
