Drafted, a newly established startup, is on a mission to transform the home design landscape by utilizing artificial intelligence to create personalized floor plans and 3D layouts. Founded just nine months ago by Nick Donahue, Drafted has successfully raised $16 million in a seed funding round backed by notable investors such as Buckley Ventures, Y Combinator, Pinterest co-founder Ben Silbermann, and OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder. With a vision to simplify home design, Drafted allows users to input specifications like lot size and desired room count, enabling them to describe their dream home and receive instant floor plans and 3D visuals. This innovative approach eliminates the need for costly professional design software, making home design more accessible. "Designing a home today requires navigating fragmented tools and highly manual workflows," Donahue stated. "We're building a system where you can shape a home as easily as you shape software." Donahue's background in the homebuilding industry, combined with his previous experience running Atmos, which aimed to streamline custom home design, has fueled his passion for making home design more user-friendly. Despite the previous venture's closure due to unfavorable market conditions, Donahue's determination led to the inception of Drafted, which he believes fills a significant gap in the market. Since its launch, Drafted's website has attracted 250,000 visitors, with users generating over 300,000 floor plans in just the past month. The platform appeals not only to homebuyers but also to architects, builders, and developers, sitting at the intersection of custom design and affordability. Donahue aims to provide a more flexible alternative to traditional architectural services and rigid stock plans, with basic plan sets expected to start around $1,000. Investors see promise in Drafted's approach, recognizing the demand for a tool that allows potential homeowners to visualize their future residences actively. Josh Buckley of Buckley Ventures expressed confidence in the startup's potential, emphasizing the importance of offering users more than just aesthetically pleasing designs. Drawing inspiration from his teenage years of building in Minecraft, Donahue is leveraging similar marketing strategies to promote Drafted. He plans to engage with creators to showcase the product and share experiences, which could help generate interest ahead of the planned rollout of paid services in the coming months. With its innovative use of AI, Drafted is poised to redefine how people approach home design.
