An AI crypto startup says it's going 'AI-native' by slashing 25% of its workforce

In a significant shift towards automation, 0G Labs, a San Francisco-based startup specializing in blockchain solutions for AI agents, has announced a reduction of its workforce by 25%. This decision comes as the company embraces its identity as an 'AI-native' organization, positioning itself to enhance its operational efficiency. CEO Michael Heinrich detailed this transformative move in an email to staff, which was later shared with Business Insider. He emphasized the company's commitment to leveraging AI technology to improve productivity, stating that 0G Labs aims to become 'a leaner, faster AI-native company.' Heinrich elaborated on the potential of AI agents, suggesting they could assume responsibilities traditionally held by human workers. 'Every day, we discuss a future where AI agents alleviate humans from tasks they shouldn't need to perform,' Heinrich wrote. He encouraged employees to utilize AI tools to achieve a remarkable '20x' increase in their output, while still recognizing the irreplaceable value of human judgment. In an official statement, a spokesperson for 0G Labs acknowledged the challenges of workforce reductions but affirmed that the efficiencies gained through AI are substantial. 'As a company that builds AI infrastructure, we believe in applying the same technology we offer to others,' the spokesperson commented. Despite its promising beginnings, 0G Labs, which raised approximately $350 million and reached a valuation of $2 billion last year, has faced challenges; its cryptocurrency token, $0G, has plummeted over 80% since its launch. The company did not provide insight into whether this decline influenced its decision to downsize. The trend of AI-related layoffs is increasingly impacting the tech sector. Following significant advancements in AI technologies, dubbed 'Claude Christmas' after Anthropic's chatbot, companies like Block and Coinbase have also announced substantial layoffs tied to automation.
