‘AI-pilled’ firms spend $7,500 per employee each month on AI

An executive from Nvidia recently highlighted a striking trend in corporate expenses, revealing that companies are now allocating more funds towards computational resources than the salaries of their own workforce. In a related statement, the CEO of Mercor disclosed that their startup's investment in tokens for internal AI agents surpasses the costs associated with hiring employees. As organizations rapidly deplete their budgets for AI tokens, a pressing question arises: Are businesses truly investing more in AI than in human resources? According to the latest findings from the Ramp AI Index, which tracks AI adoption across American firms, the answer remains 'not quite.' The top echelon of companies, referred to as 'AI-pilled,' is indeed spending a substantial $7,500 per employee each month on AI initiatives. However, this figure is still below the average monthly salary of a software engineer, which stands at approximately $16,000. For context, while the elite 1% are making significant investments, the top 10% of firms spend an average of $611 monthly per employee, and the median expenditure is only about $11.38—roughly equivalent to the cost of an enterprise plan seat. Despite ongoing economic pressures, the momentum of AI spending is on the rise, particularly among top-tier firms, which saw a 14.1% increase in per-employee spending last month. It remains to be seen if this upward trend will persist as these firms continue to explore diverse models and platforms, often favoring more affordable open-source alternatives.
