Investors predict AI is coming for labor in 2026

As advancements in artificial intelligence accelerate, concerns regarding its impact on employment are intensifying. Recent studies indicate that a significant portion of jobs—approximately 11.7%—could already be performed by AI technologies. Reports indicate that many employers are reducing entry-level positions as they increasingly integrate AI, with some citing the technology as a reason for recent layoffs. A survey conducted by TechCrunch revealed that numerous venture capitalists believe AI will profoundly influence the workforce landscape by 2026. This insight emerged even though the survey did not directly inquire about AI's impact on employment. Eric Bahn, co-founder of Hustle Fund, anticipates changes in the labor market, though the specifics remain uncertain. "I'm eager to see which repetitive tasks will be automated, and whether even complex roles will follow suit," he remarked. Bahn pondered whether this shift would result in layoffs, enhance productivity, or serve merely as a means to augment existing roles. Marell Evans, founder of Exceptional Capital, predicts that as businesses increase their investment in AI, there will be a corresponding reduction in human labor. "We are likely to witness continued layoffs, which will further affect the U.S. employment rate," Evans stated. Rajeev Dham, managing director at Sapphire, echoed this sentiment, suggesting that budgets will increasingly favor AI over human resources by 2026. Jason Mendel, a venture investor at Battery Ventures, expressed a belief that the role of AI will evolve beyond merely enhancing worker efficiency. He foresees 2026 as a pivotal year where AI will take on more autonomous functions, potentially displacing human workers in certain sectors. Antonia Dean, a partner at Black Operator Ventures, noted the nuanced relationship between AI investments and workforce reductions. Even companies that aren't directly reallocating labor budgets towards AI may still cite it as a reason for workforce cutbacks. "Many enterprises will leverage AI as a justification for trimming their workforce or curbing spending, regardless of their readiness to implement AI solutions effectively," Dean explained. While proponents of AI technology argue that it won't eliminate jobs but rather shift workers towards more meaningful tasks, skepticism remains prevalent. Concerns about job displacement are likely to persist as we approach 2026, according to insights from venture capitalists in the field.
