'Last generation to have stable long-term careers': Microsoft India head Puneet Chandok

The landscape of professional careers is on the verge of a significant transformation, according to Puneet Chandok, President of Microsoft India and South Asia. Speaking at the recent Microsoft AI Tour, he outlined how artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to create a new model of employment that emphasizes a 'portfolio' career rather than the traditional stable, long-term roles that have defined previous generations. Chandok addressed the widespread anxiety surrounding AI's impact on jobs, arguing that fears of AI 'stealing' positions are unfounded. Instead, he explained that AI will effectively 'dissect and unbundle' existing jobs by automating routine tasks. This shift will allow human workers to focus on areas that demand creativity, complex judgment, and deep expertise, while repetitive administrative duties will be taken over by automation. A key takeaway from Chandok's insights was his stark warning that we may be witnessing the last generation to experience stable, long-term careers in a single field. He emphasized the need for future workers to embrace adaptability, as they will likely juggle multiple skills and roles throughout their careers. "You and I are the last generation to have stable, long-term careers," he stated, projecting that upcoming generations will engage in a diverse portfolio of tasks. Chandok highlighted the importance of continuous learning as a critical strategy for workers navigating the AI-influenced job market. He remarked, "The real pink slip in this new AI era is not automation... the real pink slip is refusal to learn," urging individuals to consistently update their skills to remain competitive in an evolving workplace. Additionally, Microsoft's CEO, Satya Nadella, reinforced the significance of data in this new era. He emphasized that while AI models grow in prevalence, the true competitive advantage for companies will stem from their ability to leverage proprietary data effectively within these AI frameworks. Despite some critiques regarding job displacement caused by AI, Microsoft’s leadership remains optimistic, framing the situation as one of evolution and adaptation rather than outright job loss.
