TCS, Infosys, Wipro at risk as AI threatens India’s IT export engine, Citrini report warns

India's leading IT service providers, such as Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys, and Wipro, are facing an alarming rise in contract cancellations. This trend is primarily attributed to the advent of artificial intelligence, which is diminishing the cost advantages that fueled the nation's outsourcing success, as highlighted in a recent report by Citrini Research. Traditionally, Indian companies thrived by offering skilled engineers at a fraction of the cost of their Western counterparts. However, the report titled "The 2028 Global Intelligence Crisis" indicates that AI coding agents are now executing similar tasks at significantly lower costs. According to the findings, the operational expenses associated with AI coding have plummeted to essentially the cost of electricity. As a direct consequence, the report notes a notable increase in contract cancellations, which pose a serious threat to an industry that generates over $200 billion annually and plays a crucial role in maintaining India's current-account balance. The research suggests that the loss of export revenue could destabilize the national currency and external accounts. The shift in enterprise procurement strategies is also evident, with many companies opting to develop software internally using AI tools instead of renewing costly vendor contracts. A procurement manager from a Fortune 500 company shared insights from their negotiations, revealing that after hinting at replacing the vendor with AI-assisted development, the contract was renewed at a significant 30% discount. These pressures are particularly challenging for medium-sized software providers, but even the larger firms are not exempt from the impact as clients reduce their workforce, subsequently cutting down on software licenses. The report emphasizes that AI-driven layoffs, which are enhancing profitability for client companies, are simultaneously eroding revenue streams for IT service providers. The implications of this trend extend beyond corporate finances. India's IT exports are pivotal in offsetting its trade deficit, and a sustained decline in this sector could lead to a weakening of the rupee and broader macroeconomic instability. The report warns that if the trend continues, the rupee could depreciate by 18% against the dollar within four months, prompting the International Monetary Fund to initiate preliminary discussions with New Delhi by early 2028. While these projections are not definitive forecasts, they underscore the vulnerability of labor-arbitrage business models in a world increasingly dominated by automation.
