More than 50% of enterprise software could switch to AI, Mistral CEO says

In a bold prediction, Mistral AI's CEO, Arthur Mensch, revealed that more than 50% of current enterprise software could be replaced by AI technologies. Speaking during an interview with CNBC in New Delhi, he highlighted this shift as a growing concern for investors, particularly in light of recent downturns in major software stocks fueled by advancements like Anthropic's Cowork product. Mensch noted that the fears surrounding AI's capabilities to outperform existing software solutions have led to significant declines in the software sector. The iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF, which includes major players like Microsoft and Salesforce, has seen a drop of over 20% this year, while Indian tech giants such as Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys have also experienced falling stock prices. At the India Accelerates event, Mensch expressed confidence in AI's capacity to revolutionize software development. "AI is enabling us to develop software at unprecedented speeds," he stated, emphasizing that with the right infrastructure, enterprises can seamlessly integrate their data with AI systems to generate customized applications in just days. This represents a stark contrast to the traditional vertical SaaS models that took much longer to implement. Mensch identified a significant trend of 'replatforming,' where companies are increasingly inclined to shift from traditional SaaS to AI-driven solutions. "This replatforming presents a substantial opportunity for us, as we now have over 100 enterprise clients considering a shift in their IT systems to enhance efficiency and reduce costs," he explained. While he acknowledged that software responsible for managing organizational data would remain unchanged, he predicted that workflow software would face considerable disruption due to AI advancements. Bipul Sinha, CEO of Rubrik, echoed this sentiment, suggesting that while workflow software may be threatened, the underlying data infrastructure that supports AI will thrive. Mistral is also gearing up to establish its first office in India this year, aiming to tap into a burgeoning market that global tech giants are eager to penetrate. Currently collaborating with international firms operating in India, Mistral is actively seeking potential customers in both public and private sectors. Unlike its approach in Europe, the company plans to partner with local firms that possess existing physical infrastructure in India, aligning with the government's push for local data processing and storage. Mensch highlighted the importance of accommodating India's linguistic diversity, noting that Mistral's large language models are designed to support various languages, including Hindi and Punjabi. "This capability will be crucial for catering to the Indian consumer market in the future," he concluded.
