Who is Srinivas Narayanan? OpenAI VP says AI will turn coders into CEOs

The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence is transforming various sectors, and the software engineering field is at the forefront of this change. Srinivas Narayanan, the Vice President of Engineering at OpenAI, envisions a future where AI will redefine the roles of software developers. During his address at the Sangam 2025 innovation summit, hosted by the IIT Madras Alumni Association, he emphasized the need for coders to adopt a business-oriented mindset rather than sticking to traditional programming tasks. Narayanan, who has played a pivotal role in the development of OpenAI's sophisticated tools—including Codex, an AI agent capable of handling complex programming assignments—stated that the future of engineering transcends mere coding. "It’s about thinking like a boss," he asserted, suggesting that the focus of engineers will shift from intricate coding to strategic decision-making. As AI systems evolve to manage the finer details of software development, Narayanan believes that engineers will be tasked with shaping the overarching vision of projects. He explained that the role of human engineers will pivot towards answering the essential questions of "what" and "why," while intelligent systems handle the execution of the "how." This shift is not merely about automation; it represents a significant empowerment opportunity for engineers. "The ability to think bigger is going to be incredibly empowering for people," Narayanan remarked, indicating that those who adapt to this new paradigm could find themselves assuming leadership roles traditionally held by founders and CEOs. He also highlighted AI's potential to enhance the efficacy of smaller teams within organizations, stating, "An organization should be able to do a lot more with the people that we have." This capability, he argues, allows AI to significantly boost both individual and corporate productivity. Beyond the realm of engineering, Narayanan noted AI's transformative impact on research, citing advancements in solving complex scientific problems and aiding in crucial medical diagnoses. He provided examples of AI's role in identifying rare genetic disorders, showcasing how technology can achieve life-changing results with remarkable speed and precision. While optimistic about AI's potential, Narayanan acknowledged the importance of responsible deployment. "We don’t get everything perfect on the first try, but we learn and iterate rapidly," he stated, emphasizing that trust and transparency are fundamental to their approach.
