Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, has reiterated his stark prediction regarding the future of employment in the age of artificial intelligence. He foresees that nearly half of entry-level white-collar jobs could disappear, potentially driving unemployment rates to between 10% and 20% within the next five years. Amodei emphasizes that the effects of AI on the job market might unfold more rapidly than any previous technological shifts we've witnessed. During a recent interview with CBS News, Amodei highlighted specific professions that are likely to be impacted, including entry-level consultants, lawyers, and financial professionals. He stated, "AI models are already quite proficient at many tasks in the white-collar service industries. Without intervention, it’s hard to imagine that there won’t be significant job impacts. My concern is that this will be widespread and happen faster than we've seen in past technology advancements." He warned about the urgency of addressing these challenges, expressing concern that society may not be adequately prepared for the rapid transformation. "We know that this change is coming quickly, and the worst-case scenario would be if we recognize this transformation yet fail to provide enough opportunities for people to adapt," Amodei explained. Furthermore, Amodei raised alarms about the lack of transparency surrounding the risks associated with AI models, drawing parallels to historical precedents involving harmful products, such as cigarettes and opioids, where companies failed to disclose dangers to the public. Adding to this conversation, Chen Deli, a prominent researcher from DeepSeek, recently predicted at a conference in China that AI could significantly replace human jobs over the next few decades. He warned, "In the next 10 to 20 years, AI could take over the remainder of the work humans perform, posing a massive challenge for society. Tech companies need to act as defenders during this transition." When asked about the potential for AI to surpass human intelligence, Amodei affirmed, "I believe it will reach a point where it is smarter than most, if not all, humans in various domains. While not everything can be predicted, we at Anthropic are striving to foresee as much as possible. Our primary concerns include the economic implications of AI, the potential misuse of these models, and the risk of losing control over them."
