Amazon CEO says many jobs we've 'thrown human beings at' for the last 20-30 years won't need as many humans

"I do believe that a lot of the jobs that we've thrown human beings at for the last 20 or 30 years, you won't need as many human beings doing those same jobs," he stated, indicating a shift in job requirements due to AI advancements. This isn't just speculation. Jassy has hinted at impending workforce reductions at Amazon due to efficiency gains from AI integration. In a memo to employees earlier this year, he anticipated a decrease in the corporate workforce as AI tools become more prevalent throughout the company. Following this announcement, internal discussions on Amazon's Slack channels revealed employee concerns and criticisms regarding the future job landscape. Yet, it's not solely large corporations that are adjusting their staffing in response to AI. The startup Vercel, for example, recently streamlined its sales team from ten employees to just one by utilizing an AI-driven sales agent. Despite the unsettling changes, Jassy maintained an optimistic outlook, suggesting that technological shifts often introduce new job opportunities. He cited the emergence of cloud solutions architects—a role that barely existed 15 years ago—as a testament to this trend. However, the precise nature of new job roles that AI will create remains uncertain, with some concepts, such as the AI prompt engineer, seemingly losing momentum.
