Leading AI expert warns future systems could replace nearly every job — even CEO

Stuart Russell, a prominent figure in the field of artificial intelligence and a professor at UC Berkeley, has issued a stark warning about the potential for superintelligent systems to replace a vast number of jobs globally. In a recent episode of the 'Diary of a CEO' podcast, Russell expressed deep concerns regarding the current trajectory of AI development, labeling it as 'appalling' and driven more by private interests and geopolitical dynamics than by the welfare of the public. He stated, "AI systems are performing nearly every task we currently consider work." Russell highlighted the alarming pace of AI advancement, claiming, "If you aspire to be a surgeon, it would take a robot just seven seconds to outperform any human in that role." He criticized companies that are hastily pushing towards artificial general intelligence, suggesting they are taking reckless risks with humanity’s future. Russell painted a vivid picture of a corporate scenario where a board of directors pressures a CEO to cede decision-making authority to an AI system, threatening termination if they refuse. He remarked, "Unless you hand over your power to the AI, we might have to fire you because our rivals are achieving better results with AI leadership." This sentiment isn't isolated; notable tech leaders like Sam Altman of OpenAI and Sundar Pichai of Google have previously suggested that AI could feasibly step into the role of CEO. Pichai noted that the responsibilities of a CEO could be among the more straightforward tasks for an AI to handle. Meanwhile, Altman expressed a keen ambition for OpenAI to become the first major company led by an AI. As AI begins to dominate the workforce, Russell emphasized the need for humanity to redefine its purpose and meaning in a world increasingly managed by machines. He remarked, "We must determine what the next phase of existence will entail and how we can maintain our humanity in an AI-driven landscape."
