Google says 90% of tech workers are now using AI at work

A recent study conducted by Google's DORA research division reveals a significant transformation in the tech industry, with 90% of technology professionals now utilizing artificial intelligence in their work. This marks a dramatic increase from just 14% the previous year, showcasing the rapid integration of AI technologies in various job functions, particularly in coding and software development. The report, which surveyed 5,000 tech workers globally, arrives amid a broader conversation regarding the implications of AI on employment and the economy. While some industry leaders, such as Anthropic's CEO Dario Amodei, have warned of potential job losses due to AI, many in the tech sector are more optimistic, albeit cautious. However, the data does highlight a growing challenge for entry-level software engineers, as job opportunities appear to be dwindling, coinciding with recent layoffs in the tech field. Google is positioning itself as a leader in AI-assisted software development, offering a range of tools designed to facilitate coding tasks. These services vary in cost, from free to $45 monthly, and aim to support developers in generating code and managing software deployment. However, Google faces stiff competition not only from established companies like Microsoft and OpenAI but also from emerging AI startups such as Replit and Anysphere, which are witnessing increased valuations as the sector shifts toward AI integration. Ryan Salva, who manages Google's coding tools, emphasized that AI has become an integral part of daily operations for most teams at the company. He noted that engineers at Google cannot escape using AI in their workflows, as it influences everything from documentation practices to code editing. Despite the widespread adoption of AI, trust in its output varies among tech professionals. According to the survey, while 46% of respondents expressed a moderate level of trust in AI-generated code, a significant portion—23%—only had minimal trust, and 20% indicated a high level of trust. Furthermore, opinions on the impact of AI on code quality were mixed, with 31% stating it slightly improved their work, while 30% felt it had no effect at all. Salva described the evolution of AI in software development as being in a transitional phase, positioned between stages three and four on a scale of capabilities. This suggests that while AI can effectively troubleshoot systems, human oversight remains crucial, highlighting the need for multiple safety checks. The context for these developments is sobering for recent graduates in computer science and engineering. The unemployment rate among these individuals is reportedly higher than in fields such as art history and English. Job postings for software engineering roles have plummeted by 71% from February 2022 to August 2025, indicating a challenging landscape for newcomers. Recent graduates like Julio Rodriguez shared their struggles, recounting the arduous process of applying to over 150 positions before securing a job. While the swift adoption of AI brings excitement and potential, Salva believes that certain aspects of software development will remain irreplaceable, suggesting that AI's role will primarily be to streamline repetitive tasks. He noted that the buzz around AI has undoubtedly driven its rapid adoption, likening it to a fashion trend where everyone is eager to explore the latest innovations.
