China's 'one-person companies' have exploded. An Alibaba exec explains how AI agents make that possible.

In China, the phenomenon of 'one-person companies' is rapidly gaining traction, significantly aided by advancements in artificial intelligence. Kuo Zhang, president of Alibaba.com, shared insights with Business Insider about this trend, noting that solo entrepreneurs now make up approximately 30% to 40% of their e-commerce platform's user base. These individual enterprises, often referred to as OPCs, leverage AI tools like agents and innovative coding technologies to flourish without the need for additional staff. To foster this entrepreneurial spirit, several Chinese cities are enticing startups with offers of free housing, no-rent office spaces, and subsidies that can reach as high as $720,000. Zhang emphasized that AI agents are crucial in facilitating the operations of these small businesses. He oversees Alibaba.com, which connects buyers and suppliers and is seeing growth not only in China but also across markets in the U.S., Europe, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. He pointed out the various challenges faced by these solo ventures, such as managing social media accounts, uploading products to multiple platforms, and addressing customer service issues, which can be daunting tasks for smaller operations. To alleviate some of this burden, AI agents act as essential support for these solo entrepreneurs. "Rather than replacing humans, these agents serve as extensions of the entrepreneur's capabilities," Zhang explained. Recently, Alibaba.com introduced Accio Work, an AI-driven agent tailored for small businesses, capable of assisting with daily e-commerce tasks such as customer service, tax compliance, marketing, and logistics. The surge in one-person companies has been further propelled by OpenClaw, a popular open-source AI agent in China that has sparked a wave of interest and innovation. Many OPCs are utilizing OpenClaw to enhance their business operations, and Alibaba has responded by launching the JVS Claw mobile app to streamline the installation and deployment of OpenClaw for users. While the excitement around OpenClaw is palpable in China, Zhang observed that American users are generally less familiar with it. He highlighted the importance of creating user-friendly, secure, and easy-to-navigate AI tools, especially since some users have faced challenges regarding return on investment after spending significant amounts on tokens without satisfactory results. Zhang's tenure as president of Alibaba.com began in 2017, during a time of fluctuating tariff policies. He emphasized the need to remain adaptable, focusing on customer needs and technological advancements, as these factors continue to evolve. "Technology changes daily, and learning from our small and medium-sized business clients is invaluable in shaping our approach," he stated. "The key is to stay compliant with global regulations while prioritizing customer service and tech integration."
