Job seekers across various sectors may soon find themselves engaging in more preliminary screening interviews. While this development might sound promising, it does not necessarily mean an increase in job openings. Instead, recruiters often overwhelmed by the task of identifying qualified candidates will delegate routine screening responsibilities—such as background checks, salary expectations, and candidate availability—to artificial intelligence. Alex, a startup dedicated to transforming the recruitment landscape with AI technology, claims to be streamlining the process by facilitating video interviews and phone screenings. Co-founder Aaron Wang, who launched Alex approximately eighteen months ago, shared with TechCrunch that their voice AI tool can independently conduct interviews with candidates shortly after they submit their applications. "Our AI recruiter manages thousands of interviews each day, assisting individuals in securing positions at some of the largest corporations globally," he remarked. Although Wang, a former Facebook employee and quantitative analyst at a hedge fund, did not disclose specific clients, he mentioned that their partners include Fortune 100 companies, major financial institutions, nationwide restaurant chains, and prominent accounting firms. Investors are optimistic about the growing trend of AI interviewers, believing that many organizations will soon adopt this technology. This confidence has propelled Alex to raise $17 million in a Series A funding round, led by Peak XV Partners, with contributions from Y Combinator, Uncorrelated Ventures, and various chief human resources officers from unnamed Fortune 500 companies. This new round of funding builds upon the company’s earlier success, having raised $3 million in seed funding led by 1984 Ventures last year. Alex is not alone in the AI recruitment space, facing competition from emerging companies such as HeyMilo, ConverzAI, and Ribbon. Notably, Mercor, an AI data labeling startup aspiring to achieve a $10 billion valuation, also began its journey in the recruitment sector. Looking ahead, Alex envisions interviewing millions of job candidates to create a more comprehensive and nuanced professional profile database that surpasses what LinkedIn currently provides. "Our hypothesis is that a ten-minute conversation with an individual reveals significantly more about them than their LinkedIn profile ever could," Wang explained. For the time being, Alex’s primary goal remains to assist recruiters in freeing up their time, enabling them to foster stronger relationships with pre-qualified candidates and provide guidance to hiring managers.
