AI godfather says Meta’s new 29-year-old AI boss is ‘inexperienced’ and warns of staff exodus

Yann Lecun, a prominent figure in the field of artificial intelligence and former chief AI scientist at Meta, has expressed serious concerns regarding the company's new chief AI officer, Alexander Wang, who is just 29 years old. Lecun described Wang as 'inexperienced' and warned that this could lead to a significant exodus of staff from the tech giant. Wang, who co-founded Scale AI and became a billionaire at a young age, stepped into his role at Meta in 2025 after the company acquired a 49% stake in his startup. His recruitment was part of Meta's aggressive strategy to attract top AI talent amidst a fierce competition for expertise in the sector. Reports indicate that Meta offered lucrative signing bonuses, potentially reaching $100 million, to lure talent away from competitors like OpenAI, as the company strives to lead the rapidly evolving AI market. In an interview with the Financial Times, Lecun, often referred to as one of the 'godfathers of AI,' commented on Wang's leadership. While he acknowledged Wang's ability to learn quickly and recognize his own knowledge gaps, Lecun pointed out that the young executive lacks vital experience in research methodologies and understanding what attracts or deters researchers. Lecun, who left Meta in November, shared insights about the internal dynamics at the company, noting that CEO Mark Zuckerberg had lost trust in the team involved with the AI division following allegations that the company manipulated performance benchmarks for its Llama 4 model. As a result, Lecun stated that Zuckerberg had effectively sidelined the entire generative AI organization. He warned that many talented individuals have already departed, and those who remain may soon follow. Lecun stressed that Meta was neglecting innovative ideas in favor of safer, more conventional approaches, which could hinder the company's progress in the competitive landscape of AI. When asked about the implications of Meta's hiring strategy, Lecun maintained that time would reveal its effectiveness, but he cautioned that large language models (LLMs) may not be the ultimate path toward achieving superintelligence. He hinted that this perspective might not align with the views of many within Meta, including Wang. In a new venture, Lecun has established Advanced Machine Intelligence Labs, focusing on developing 'world models'—AI systems that learn from various data sources, including videos and language. A partner company, Nabla, emphasized in a press release the limitations of LLMs, highlighting issues like hallucinations and unpredictable reasoning, which complicate autonomous decision-making.
