The Godfather of AI warns that cuts to universities will cost the US its AI edge over China

Geoffrey Hinton, renowned as the 'Godfather of AI,' has issued a stark warning about the future of artificial intelligence in the United States. During a recent appearance on Jon Stewart's show, Hinton expressed concern that the U.S. could soon fall behind China in the AI race. While he acknowledged that the U.S. currently holds an advantage, he cautioned that this lead is precarious. Hinton emphasized the detrimental impact of reducing funding for basic science and research universities. He stated, "If you want to ensure that a country lags behind in two decades, the best strategy is to undermine the funding of foundational research and universities." He pointed out that the advancements in deep learning, which have propelled the current AI revolution, were made possible through years of consistent funding for basic research—costing far less than a single B-1 bomber. The former Google researcher did not specify the exact funding cuts he was referring to, but he highlighted ongoing tensions between the Trump administration and elite universities over various issues, including accusations of inadequate responses to antisemitic harassment. The administration has threatened to withdraw federal research funding from prestigious institutions like Harvard, MIT, and Princeton unless they comply with certain policy changes. In a broader context, Hinton noted that if global leadership in the ethical development of AI is to emerge, it may have to come from Europe or China, rather than the U.S. He suggested that the current political climate in America may delay such leadership for several years, likely until after the conclusion of Trump’s presidency.
