Geoffrey Hinton, renowned as the 'Godfather of AI,' has expressed mixed feelings about the technology he helped pioneer. However, he recently highlighted a standout application of AI during his appearance on 'BBC Newsnight.' When asked to identify a positive example of AI's impact, Hinton pointed to Alpha School, a network of private educational institutions in the United States. These schools utilize an AI-driven learning model that allows students from kindergarten through 12th grade to complete core subjects in just two hours. This innovative approach frees up time for students to engage in life skills development and hands-on workshops, providing a more enriching educational experience. Hinton praised this model, stating it allows teachers to devote their time to guiding students through projects and fostering social interactions, rather than merely lecturing. He noted, "A normal teacher is in broadcast mode, telling children answers to questions they didn't necessarily wonder about. In contrast, an AI tutor can respond to the specific queries students have, enabling them to learn more efficiently." Despite the benefits of such a system, Hinton acknowledged that the Alpha School’s tuition, ranging from $40,000 to $75,000 annually, reflects the high cost of AI technology. However, he is hopeful that advancements in the field will lead to lower costs in the future. Many locations also offer tuition rates between $10,000 and $15,000. Joe Liemandt, the principal of Alpha School, has implemented a competitive salary structure, with a minimum pay of $100,000 for teachers, aiming to attract top talent. While Hinton remains optimistic about AI's educational applications, he expressed deep concerns regarding the broader implications of AI technology. "It saddens me that I dedicated my life to developing this technology, which now poses significant dangers that are not being taken seriously enough," he stated.
