This week, the unexpected outages of Anthropic's Claude AI tools left many software developers grappling with a daunting challenge: coding manually. Reports of service disruptions began circulating on Monday, with users experiencing difficulties accessing both Claude.ai and Claude Code. Anthropic acknowledged the issue, noting "elevated errors" on their status page, but confirmed by Wednesday that the problems had been resolved. The incident underscores the increasing reliance of developers on Claude's coding capabilities, which have become integral to their daily workflows. Gauresh Pandit, a senior software engineer at Meta, shared his experience with Business Insider, explaining that when Claude went offline, he shifted his focus to non-coding tasks, believing that tackling code manually would be less efficient. "It may not feel like we've lost the skill, but using a large language model (LLM) is now so streamlined that it’s like a single button press to accomplish tasks," he remarked. Numerous users took to platforms like Reddit and Discord to express their newfound dependency on these AI tools. One user humorously noted, "Claude outages hit way harder when you realize you've outsourced half your brain to it," while another quipped, "I guess I'll write code like a caveman." The impact of AI on software development has been significant, with many developers reporting increased productivity alongside heightened feelings of being overworked. This shift has led to fewer entry-level coding positions, as some tech giants incorporate AI usage into performance evaluations. Concerns about skill atrophy among employees relying heavily on AI have also emerged. The outages coincided with a tumultuous period for Anthropic, following a standoff with the Pentagon regarding the use of its technology. The situation escalated to the point where President Donald Trump instructed federal agencies to cease using Anthropic's AI tools, prompting OpenAI to secure a deal with the Department of Defense, which resulted in a wave of cancellations of ChatGPT subscriptions. Despite these challenges, Claude's popularity surged, placing it at the top of Apple's App Store. Boris Cherny, Anthropic's head of Claude Code, attributed the recent outages to a rapid increase in users stressing their services. The reliance on Claude among developers is evident. Dishant Banga, a data scientist from Charlotte, North Carolina, noted that he uses Claude as part of his daily learning routine, especially after being laid off. He mentioned using the tool to experiment with fine-tuning large language models while preparing for technical interviews. For Banga, the integration of Claude with Microsoft's Visual Studio has made it a crucial asset in his coding routine, enhancing his efficiency. Engineers from major companies like Meta, Netflix, Salesforce, and Accenture are also employing Claude Code, with its adoption rivaling that of OpenAI and Google’s competing tools. In a recent survey by Gergely Orosz, a former Uber engineering manager, Claude Code was identified as the most popular AI tool among nearly 1,000 respondents, indicating that it is now as widely used as GitHub Copilot was three years ago. Sathika Hettiarachchi, an IT student and software developer, shared his preference for Claude over alternatives from Google and xAI, describing it as his "go-to" AI model for coding projects. He reflected on the rapid dependency on AI, stating, "I never realized how people (including myself) have become so dependent on AI in such a short time until the Claude outage happened."
