Suno, the AI-driven music generation company, announced on Wednesday that it successfully raised $400 million in its Series D funding round, bringing its valuation to an impressive $5.4 billion. This latest funding round highlights investor confidence in Suno's potential, especially considering it was just seven months ago that the company secured funding at a valuation of $2.45 billion. Despite facing significant legal hurdles, including copyright lawsuits, Suno's growth remains robust. The company has acknowledged that its AI training involves copyrighted music, asserting that their practices fall under the doctrine of fair use. This legal concept allows for limited use of copyrighted material, although its application can vary significantly depending on specific circumstances. Major music industry players, including Universal Music Group (UMG) and Sony, have been actively pursuing legal action against Suno. These companies initially filed a lawsuit in 2024, claiming that Suno's AI was trained on 560 of their copyrighted songs. This number has since escalated dramatically, with recent amendments to the case indicating that over 61,000 additional tracks were allegedly used without proper authorization. Despite these challenges, Suno continues to thrive in the competitive music app market, frequently ranking high on the App Store charts. At the time of its previous funding round, users were reportedly generating more than 7 million songs daily through the platform, according to a pitch deck acquired by Billboard. The Series D round saw participation from notable investors such as Bond Capital, IVP, Forerunner, Union Square Ventures, Alkeon, and Quiet, along with contributions from existing backers including Matrix, Lightspeed, Menlo Ventures, and Schroders Capital. Suno expressed its excitement about the backing from prominent figures within the music industry, although it chose not to reveal specific names. This lack of disclosure is noteworthy, as endorsements from well-known artists could significantly alter the narrative surrounding the company's ongoing legal disputes.
