In today's educational landscape, where artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly prevalent, a troubling trend has emerged among college students. Many are submitting assignments, including personal reflection papers, that are entirely generated by AI. This phenomenon has left educators dismayed, especially when students seem shocked upon being discovered. A striking example of this situation has come to light at the University of Illinois, where the ongoing challenges of academia in the AI era are vividly illustrated. The Data Science Discovery course, taught by statistics professor Karle Flanagan and computer scientist Wade Fagen-Ulmschneider, has become a focal point of discussion. This introductory course employs a system known as the Data Science Clicker to monitor attendance and participation. During lectures, students scan a QR code that links to a unique multiple-choice question, which they must answer within a tight timeframe of approximately 90 seconds. However, midway through the semester, the professors began to notice a significant discrepancy; more students were recorded as participating than were physically present in the lecture halls, which host over 1,000 students across various sections. To investigate this anomaly, Flanagan and Fagen-Ulmschneider delved into server logs and monitored the frequency with which students refreshed the question page. It appeared that some students were receiving real-time updates about the questions being posed, thanks to information shared among classmates. This incident highlights not only the challenges faced by educators but also the ethical implications of using AI in academic settings.
