AI investment cushions global economy against war shocks, says IMF

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has highlighted that while ongoing conflicts in the Middle East exert pressure on global economic growth by inflating energy prices and disrupting supply chains, the surge in artificial intelligence (AI) investments is acting as a crucial stabilizing factor. In its recent World Economic Outlook (WEO) Update, the IMF described the current global economy as navigating through 'crosscurrents of war and technology.' Geopolitical strife is introducing new uncertainties, yet AI-driven investments and productivity enhancements are providing necessary support to economic activity. The IMF has maintained its global growth projections at 3.0% for 2026 and 3.4% for 2027, signifying that technological advancements are helping to alleviate some of the adverse effects caused by geopolitical tensions. The organization noted that the recent conflicts have led to a spike in oil prices, raising concerns about inflation, fiscal health, and external accounts, especially for nations reliant on energy imports. However, easing geopolitical tensions and a decline in crude oil prices have somewhat mitigated these risks. Moreover, the IMF emphasized that the accelerating integration of AI is propelling investment in digital infrastructure, semiconductors, and technologies that enhance productivity. This momentum is crucial for sustaining economic growth in an increasingly volatile global context. Nonetheless, the report cautioned that inflation rates remain elevated in several regions, and the process of reducing inflation has become inconsistent, limiting central banks' ability to swiftly adjust monetary policies. The IMF also pointed out that the outlook is still fraught with risks, such as potential escalations in geopolitical tensions, disruptions in global trade and financial markets, and ongoing inflationary challenges. Despite these hurdles, the Fund suggests that persistent technological innovation, particularly the expanding role of AI across various sectors, could serve as a significant driver for long-term productivity growth, assisting the global economy during one of its most challenging periods in recent history.
