Meta and Microsoft are making big moves in opposite directions after earnings

This earnings season has highlighted a stark contrast between two tech giants in the realm of artificial intelligence. Meta Platforms experienced a significant surge, demonstrating that its heavy investment in AI is yielding positive results, while Microsoft saw its shares decline as it grappled with investor skepticism regarding its spending strategies and a slowdown in its cloud services. Meta's recent performance has impressed investors, leading to an 8% increase in its stock price. The company revealed plans to allocate between $115 billion and $135 billion towards AI this year, nearly doubling its expenditure from 2025. This decision comes on the back of a robust 24% year-over-year revenue growth, primarily driven by online advertising, which has alleviated some of the previous concerns regarding its ambitious financial commitments. CEO Mark Zuckerberg indicated that the company is developing a variety of innovative products in the upcoming year, reinforcing its commitment to building “personal super intelligence.” Conversely, Microsoft's stock took a hit, plummeting 11% as it reported a deceleration in growth within its Azure cloud division, which fell to 39% growth from 40% in the previous fiscal quarter. Investors closely monitor this segment as an indicator of enterprise AI demand. Additionally, Microsoft reported a staggering 66% increase in capital expenditures and finance leases, reaching $37.5 billion, which exceeded analyst expectations. This surge in spending aims to meet the burgeoning demand within its cloud and AI sectors. However, the company is currently facing compute capacity limitations, with Microsoft finance chief Amy Hood stating that Azure could have achieved 40% growth if all new GPU chips had been allocated to the Azure business during the first two quarters.
