A lawyer reveals how he snagged $9 million in 4 days for his AI-native law firm

Pamir Ehsas, a former tech lawyer at one of Norway's leading law firms, has embarked on a groundbreaking journey to launch his own AI-powered law firm, Moritz. In a remarkable feat, Moritz raised an impressive $9 million within just four days, coinciding with its graduation from Y Combinator, as reported by Business Insider. Ehsas, who has previously represented high-profile clients including OpenAI, is now at the forefront of a new breed of law firms that aim to deliver routine legal services without the hefty price tags traditionally associated with Big Law. The startup's funding round attracted significant backing from renowned investors, including Y Combinator, Urban Innovation Fund, and 20VC, along with a roster of individual investors from well-known companies like Reddit, Instacart, and Dropbox. Moritz, one of three law firms selected for Y Combinator's latest batch, aims to combine the efficiency of software with the expertise of human lawyers to expedite document creation and review. In the last three months alone, it has reportedly managed contracts totaling $2 billion across 100 different companies. As Moritz prepared for its Demo Day, where startups pitch to potential investors, Ehsas and his co-founder, machine learning engineer Stefan Mandaric, found themselves inundated with interest from over 200 investors. They had originally aimed to raise $3 million from venture capital firms, but within a day of their initial meetings, they received enough verbal commitments to meet and exceed that goal. The firm has adopted a unique pricing model, charging clients fixed fees for specific services rather than billing by the hour. Smaller clients pay upfront for services, such as $500 for a job offer letter, while larger enterprises utilize a tiered pricing structure averaging $500 to $700 per contract review. This innovative approach not only sets Moritz apart from traditional law firms but also positions it to adapt to the evolving landscape of legal services. Ehsas acknowledges the inherent risks associated with their model, particularly concerning accountability for the AI's output. Unlike conventional legal software companies that often include disclaimers about potential inaccuracies, Moritz emphasizes its commitment to maximum accountability for all legal advice and documentation. To mitigate risks, Moritz is selective in its hiring practices, ensuring that only experienced lawyers from reputable firms join its ranks. The firm's strategy reflects a broader industry shift, as AI technologies enable new business models that challenge conventional practices in the legal field. As Moritz continues to innovate and attract attention, it stands at the intersection of technology and law, paving the way for a future where AI and human expertise collaborate to streamline legal processes.
