Recent data indicates a remarkable uptick in AI utilization, prompting tech giants to significantly increase their investments in this rapidly evolving field. OpenRouter, a platform that enables developers to access various AI models, has reported that its activity has nearly doubled in the early weeks of 2026, as evidenced by the number of AI tokens processed. Specifically, OpenRouter managed an impressive 13 trillion AI tokens in the week ending February 9, a sharp rise from 6.4 trillion in the first week of January. This surge becomes even more pronounced when viewed over a year, showcasing the growing reliance on AI technologies. OpenRouter connects to a diverse range of AI models, including Google's Gemini, Anthropic's Claude, xAI's Grok, OpenAI's GPT series, and numerous open-source contributions from DeepSeek and Moonshot AI, among others. It's important to note that these figures exclude AI tokens directly processed by major AI firms, representing only a fraction of total activity; for example, Google processed 1.3 quadrillion tokens monthly last summer. According to Anand Iyer, a partner at Lightspeed Venture Partners, the recent spike in usage is largely attributed to a surge in activity surrounding AI agents, particularly the open-source platform OpenClaw. This has triggered an exponential rise in inference—the process by which AI models and services operate in the cloud. Iyer remarked, "The demand for AI inference is currently being driven by agentic platforms, especially OpenClaw," noting the shift from basic chatbots to more sophisticated automated systems. Additional indicators of increasing AI demand include a rise in the need for Nvidia AI chips. Recent analyses show a notable rebound in rental costs for Nvidia H100 GPUs since early December, further reflecting strong AI demand. OpenClaw, launched in November 2025, coincides with this surge in interest and has contributed to increased traffic for coding services like Lovable, Replit, and Wix's Base44, which saw a 17% month-over-month growth in January—the most significant increase since April 2025. Analysts attribute this uptick to advancements in frontier models that have enhanced the effectiveness of these platforms. While the debate continues regarding whether the current pace of AI adoption justifies the massive investments being made, there are signs that demand is solid enough to support such expenditures. Iyer noted that the current capital expenditure in AI is primarily spurred by the training needs of large frontier labs, a process that requires substantial data and energy resources. Ultimately, as long as the revenue generated from inference grows exponentially to match the output from training, the sustainability of these efforts appears justifiable. OpenClaw represents a pivotal shift in generative AI, following the explosive launch of ChatGPT in late 2022, which became the fastest-growing tech product in history. More recently, AI models are evolving to support autonomous digital agents capable of performing complex tasks independently. OpenClaw's technology facilitates automation in coding and workflows by enabling agents to interact with various computer systems, including email and calendars. Furthermore, Anthropic has introduced Claude Cowork, an AI agent designed for tasks like document generation and file management, with its latest model, Claude Sonnet 4.6, enhancing its ability to perform tasks in a manner akin to human users. The continuous integration of AI into everyday tasks illustrates its potential, as these models can operate tirelessly, handling computing tasks around the clock, in stark contrast to human limitations.
