When it comes to total water use, AI data centers are a drop in the bucket

In discussions surrounding artificial intelligence, especially among critics, the narrative often revolves around the significant water demands of data centers due to their cooling requirements. However, a recent analysis by Amazon reveals that the overall water consumption of AI data centers is relatively minimal when viewed in the broader context. According to Amazon's blog post, their global data centers extracted approximately 2.5 billion gallons of water in 2025. While this figure may initially appear staggering, it pales in comparison to the staggering 117 trillion gallons withdrawn across the United States in 2015 alone. To further illustrate this point, consider the annual water consumption of other sectors: US lawns and landscaping use about 3.3 trillion gallons, California's almond orchards consume around 1.3 trillion gallons, and US golf courses utilize approximately 531 billion gallons each year. It's worth noting that Amazon is just one player in the data center landscape. Google reported water withdrawals exceeding 6.1 billion gallons in 2024, while Microsoft and Meta accounted for about 2.75 billion and 1.4 billion gallons, respectively. A 2021 study published in Nature estimated that the total water usage of all US data centers reached around 163 billion gallons, including indirect consumption from non-renewable energy sources. This figure has likely increased as AI technology has expanded, with projections indicating that Texas data centers alone may consume between 25 to 49 billion gallons in 2024, potentially rising to 399 billion gallons by 2030. Even if annual water usage by data centers climbed into the trillions, it would still represent only a small fraction of national and global water consumption figures, underscoring the need to contextualize these numbers within larger water usage discussions.
