Trump AI czar hits back at ‘doomer cult’ and mass-unemployment fears

David Sacks, the White House AI czar, pushed back against fears of widespread job loss due to artificial intelligence during a recent address at the Amazon Web Services summit in Washington, DC. This statement comes in the wake of warnings from prominent AI leaders, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who predicted that AI could potentially increase unemployment rates to 20% in the coming years. Sacks expressed skepticism regarding the notion that AI would lead to massive unemployment, stating, "Personally, I don’t think it’s going to lead to a giant wave of unemployment. It’s actually very hard to replace a human job entirely; it’s easier to replace pieces of it." He strongly disagreed with the prediction of 20% unemployment, emphasizing the complexity of fully replacing human labor with machines. Amodei had previously raised alarms about AI's impact on entry-level jobs, suggesting that up to half of these positions could be at risk within the next five years. He shared his concerns in an interview with CNN, where he highlighted the potential for AI to surpass human capabilities in various intellectual tasks and the challenges society might face in adapting to these rapid advancements. Sacks criticized what he termed the “doomer cult,” which he argues promotes overly cautious regulation of AI and underestimates its potential for economic growth. He expressed optimism that AI could boost economic growth rates significantly, stating, "I could see AI driving our growth rate to something like 4 or 5%." Despite his positive outlook, Sacks acknowledged that the transition to AI could disrupt certain job sectors, necessitating retraining for affected workers. He noted, "There will be challenges too, but I think it’s going to be a really bright future." A recent Pew Research Center survey reflects public sentiment, revealing that nearly two-thirds of U.S. adults believe AI will lead to a decrease in jobs over the next 20 years, with many expressing significant concern about potential job losses. Nevertheless, Sacks reassured attendees that maintaining a competitive edge in AI is crucial, particularly with China’s advancements in the field, which he claims are only months behind those of the U.S. As President Donald Trump pursues a major domestic policy and tax cut initiative that includes a moratorium on certain AI regulations, experts warn that such measures could leave AI companies unregulated and potentially harmful. While Amodei sees great potential for AI to drive medical breakthroughs, like curing cancer, he remains wary of the job market implications. Sacks concluded by emphasizing the inevitability of AI’s integration into the economy, advocating for preparedness rather than resistance. "It’s like trying to stop the tides; it’s just not going to happen," he asserted, underscoring the importance of embracing technological change.
